Step-by-Step Invisalign®, an Alternative to Braces

If you’re interested in getting Invisalign as an alternative to braces, you’re probably wondering the process and treatment involves. Below is a step-by-step process of the typical treatment you will undergo when deciding to go with Invisalign braces.

Firstly, finding an orthodontist’s office is key; make sure you are comfortable with your Orthodontist as you will be visiting the office on many occasions during your treatment. You will begin your journey with a consultation to find out if Invisalign is a treatment that will be suitable for you, often time’s consultations are complimentary and there will be no need to pay for your first appointment. During your consultation, you will go through the treatment plan with your Orthodontist and discuss the cost of treatment and payment plans.

Your second appointment will consist of taking impressions of your teeth, which will be done by using state-of-the-art iTero Digital Impression Scanner to make the more accurate impressions of your teeth without having to gooey impression material that can make some patients gag. Your doctor will plan your treatment using ClinCheck® software, your Orthodontist can anticipate how your teeth will look at every stage during your treatment to ensure you will be happy with your end results.

The number of aligners you will receive to achieve the end result will depend of the complexity and severity of each patient’s case. It is crucial that you wear your aligners between 20-22 hours a day to start seeing results. The aligners will change every 2 weeks and during the first 2 days of each aligner tray, wear it as much as possible during the first 48 hours. It is often recommended during this time to only take out your aligners when eating, drinking or brushing your teeth. It is crucial to change your aligners on time, and in the right order- skipping steps will not make the treatment go any faster and can irritate your mouth. If you are looking for an alternative to speed up treatment, some patients will receive ‘buttons’ to wear on their aligners. The buttons help the trays stay in place, or move a tooth.

Your first checkup will be around the 6-8 week mark to see if there will be any extra refinements to give the best results and to ensure the treatment is moving along correctly. During these check up’s is when, if needed, the tooth-colored buttons would be placed in the aligners to help move the teeth in a specific direction and speed up the process of the treatment.

After completing your treatment, you will receive a fixed and removable retainer. On some occasions, fixed retainers are not needed, and is up to the patient’s discretion. Another impression will be taken at this time to make the removable retainer, similar to the Invisalign aligners, but your removable retainer will only be worn at night. The next 24 months are crucial to the movement of your teeth; you will see your Orthodontist periodically for check-ups to ensure your teeth are not shifting.
